One of the great joys of being a professional photographer is that, as long as your camera is in hand, the world is truly your oyster.
While I can’t get enough of gorgeous photoshoots on the shores of Lake Michigan (like this dreamy session here!), it’s always exciting to get creative somewhere new.
Not only are Shannon and Joe brilliant (they’re both high achieving medical pros), kind, funny and totally crazy about each other, they are also - as I learned on the fateful day of their Portland, Maine engagement session - totally ready to adjust the game plan at the drop of a hat if it means that gorgeous photographs they’ll love forever will be the end result.
Allow me to explain!
I flew into Boston the morning before our scheduled engagement session (because I always allow for plenty of travel time when doing destination sessions and destination weddings!) with full knowledge that there was trouble a’brewin’. You see, we had a little problem on the horizon by the name of….Hurricane Lee.
Yep. A huge storm system was making its way up the coast with its sights set on New England and Little John Island (a sweet little island in Casco Bay) was smack dab in its crosshairs - yikes!
Upon realizing that our session might not just be rained out but would more than likely be flat out dangerous to even attempt were we to wait until the following day, we hopped on a call and made a game time decision. Despite these beautiful people just getting off a long shift at the hospital (the very one where they met and fell in love!), they raced home, changed clothes and high tailed it down to the very beach where Joe popped the question several months prior.
I met them along the shore about an hour before sunset and to say that conditions were perfect would be an understatement.
The sky had that illustrious “a storm’s a ’comin’”, ethereal light reflecting off the calm water in Casco Bay and these two were truly unbelievable in front of my camera. If the way they handled the curveball thrown at us for their engagement session is any indication, Shannon and Joe are going to absolutely crush the whole marriage thing!
